Volunteer!

Since 1981, volunteers from the Monadnock Region have been “answering the call”. The Samaritans, Inc. has been training volunteers to use non-judgmental, non-religious befriending skills to help callers of all ages while ensuring confidentiality and anonymity. Some callers may feel that their problems seem too big, confusing or overwhelming to share with family and friends. Others may feel that friends and family are tired of hearing their problem. A volunteer can make the difference. Can you answer the call?

The Samaritans’ 24 hour hotlines rely on volunteers, who through the goodness of their hearts reach out to help those in crisis. People from all walks of life; working people, retirees, college students, LISTEN carefully and without judgment to those who are lonely, depressed or suicidal.

We seek volunteers that are compassionate, understanding and willing to LISTEN. This community service opportunity is meaningful and challenging. You could save a life! Training is very thorough, and includes classroom and group instruction, buddy shifts, observation shifts and monthly volunteer meetings. You are given constant support and guidance from experienced volunteers, home leaders, the Program Coordinator and the Executive Director. This service experience is unique. The feeling that you may have helped to save a life is indescribable. We accept volunteers desiring community service, internships, practicums, contact hours, federal work study and volunteer experiences. We offer flexible schedules and a pleasant work environment.

Callers:

  • May feel that the only way to end their pain is to end their life…
  • May be concerned friends or family looking for advice on how to care for an “at risk” loved-one…
  • May be depressed or going through a difficult time because of life’s stresses…
  • May be experiencing loss or grief…
  • May need respite from being a caregiver…

All calls are confidential and anonymous. We do not require callers to provide personal or identifying information. We do not send help unless the caller asks us to.
